Match Report - Twyford Barca - B U10's 2010/11

Type: EDYL = Exeter & District Youth League

In the opening minutes of the first half, Twyford started very defensively inviting some early pressure from Inter Heavitree. The crowd were treated after three minutes to an inch-perfect sliding tackle out by the corner flag from right back; Aaron Long. His counterpart on the left; Zack Veen was also on top of our opponents standing up to clear a barrage of attempts.

Soon, being a man down started to take its toll and gaps started to appear in our formation, leading to extra bodies in the box. Inevitably the home side took the lead with a shot low into the bottom corner, which just missed the fingertips of keeper; Konnor Tebby.

The opening goal lifted the spirits of Inter who continued pressing forwards and found the back of the net a couple of minutes later. This did not deter our players and the midfield battle from Patrick Smith and Matt Reed was tremendous. Patrick demonstrated some excellent skills with the football twisting and weaving his way through the Heavitree players.

Twyford came in at the break a very respectable 3 goals behind; we had just been unable to penetrate the Heavitree midfield and had had to defend for most of the first half. Determined words of encouragement at half time saw our Barca team pushing further up the pitch in the second half. We began to link our play; more long passing out to the right hand side enabled Eden Reynell to charge down and muscle through the defence.

Konnor Tebby needed to be on the top of his game after a shot looped over the heads of our defenders forcing him to leap up to his right and tip the ball over the crossbar. He was also called into action a few minutes later to dive wide to his left to push the ball past the post and behind for a corner. The match finished 5-0 but with the way we played, had we had a full complement of players, I am confident we would have come away with a draw.
