Monaco played their second round cup game under the lights at Ottery St Mary and ran out convincing winners in the end but were forced to work for the right to progress in the competition. The home side were well drilled and looked as though they fancied a good go at Monaco who were two leagues above them. Monaco’s quality of passing was the difference between the teams in the first half and Tom Haines in goal was never called into action. Alex Wright and Jack Zilch had the measure of the opposing forwards and never lost their concentration. Noah Wright at right back was able to act as a winger and enjoyed his freedom and linked well with Matt Watts. It was from a Watts cross that Monaco went ahead. Dan Verrier nodding in from the edge of the six yard box mid way through the half. It was only what Monaco deserved but they found it hard to get the second. Watts chested in what looked like a good goal but the referee saw it as handball so it was ruled out. This gave the home side some hope and they continued to frustrate until Noah Wright’s good cross found Nick Merriam in the box who slotted in number two. Merriam broke through to lob the keeper soon afterwards and Watts rounded off the scoring after a smart one-two with Merriam. Tom Roberts had his best game of the season so far and there were also good performances from Anthony Ansell, Tom Parkins and Bradley Kelly. Richard Sandiford played excellently in his new position of left back and was ably deputised by Alex Goldsbrough when he went off injured.
