Lyon enjoyed a comfortable 7-2 win against Wellington which kept them in touch with the league leaders. The passing and patient build up play was very good throughout the match as was their cutting edge in the final third of the field. Dan Hayfield was at the heart of everything and his pairing with Nick Merriam up front caused problems for the visiting defence. Anthony Ansell and Aaron Farebrother bossed the midfield and got into the box whenever possible. It was Ansell who opened the scoring with a header from Hayfields cross and Farebrother who headed in at the far post from another Hayfield cross to make it two. Merriam fired in number three before half time. It was mainly one way traffic in the second half even though Wellington scored two goals there was never any real threat to the result. Lyon pushed forward looking for more goals and Merriam latched on to a Tom Haines through ball and then completed his hat trick from Hayfield’s pass. Hayfield then rounded off an impressive afternoon with a cool finish
