Match Report - Twyford Spartans - G U13's 2009/10

Twyford Under 13s girls opened their season with a trip to Exeter to take on Phoenix Club in an evenly contented game. The girls took the upper hand in the opening five minutes but were unable to take advantage of numerous chances on goal. Mid way through the first half and against the run or play Phoenix took a 1-0 lead. Twyford responded with an excellent through ball from Alice Butler with Amy Sanders having only the keeper to beat scored TwyfordÂÂÂÂ’s first goal of the game. After this the game settled down with both teams playing good football. Phoenix then scored again. Alice Butler took a well worked corner leaving Fern Bernhardt the job of tapping the ball home to make the scores equal again. Twyford were unlucky to concede just on half time. In the second half a combination of a very large pitch and fitness took its toll on the Twyford side which gave Phoenix chances to score. With the score at 6-2 to Phoenix, Twyford made a couple of tactical changes and Alice Butler worked well down the left only to be taken down and awarded a free kick just inside Phoenix's half and scored with a thunderous shot in the top left hand corner. This spurred the girls on and were unlucky not to score again. Playing well for Twyford in midfield were Robyn Freed, Amy Chanin and Fern Bernhardt. The defensive duo of Alice Butler and Laura Huxtable worked well together. On her debut keeper Holly Jackson pulled off a good performance. Girl of the match, also on her debut, was Beth Leanney.
