14.03.2009 ED CUP Stoke Hill Spurs 3 1 Twyford Monaco Harry Denson (1)

Twyford Monaco narrowly missed the chance to put out Exeter League leaders Stoke Hill in the quarter finals of the cup. In the end the score was 3 - 1 after extra time but the score did not do justice to Monaco's heroic team effort.

For much of the game Monaco defended as if their lives depended on it and even though Tom Haines in goal had a busy game gathering crosses and diving on the ball he had few shots to save. This was because he was sheilded so well by Harry Venner, Connor Tucker, Matt Gillet and Jack Zilch. Alex Wright made many timely interceptions and tackles which kept the main dangerman in the Stoke Hill side quiet for most of the game.

After going in at halftime goalless, Monaco found themselves with more of the game and Harry Denson broke free of the Stoke defence to put Monaco ahead. The midfield of Aaron Farebrother, Matt watts and Dan Verrier worked to try to find the killer second goal but the striking duo of Nick Merriam and Anthony Ansell were up against a very strong, physical defence and couldn't find a way through.
Monaco's hopes were dashed in the final minutes when Stoke Hill were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and an unstoppable shot into the top corner put the game into extra time.

Monaco continued to hold the home side at bay but just as penalties looked likely Stoke hill scored with another good finish and immediately scored the third to kill off a brave effort by Monaco.
