Twyford Spartans was founded in 1975 as Tiverton Cub Scouts. Played it’s first match in 1976 against Stoke Hill Cubs. Other cubs leaders were not happy as boys were joining the cubs with the sole reason of joining in the football training. This caused a conflict of interests and Twyford Spartans was formed. Twyford was the old name for Tiverton meaning two fords on the River Exe. The old film about the Spartans against the odds against the Persia army was on the TV when Geoff Crocker and myself were discussing the name. The club has done well with honours and have also won European tournaments in Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. The club has also visited Sweden, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland, France, Spain and Sam Marino. Our must famous player currently is Jay Stansfield although Jax Gray would dispute this. The club is a registered charity and is currently in a partnership with Tiverton Town which is growing all the time.
