About Twyford Spartans

Twyford Spartans Youth FC is a community football club based in Tiverton, Devon, providing opportunities for children and young people to enjoy football in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment. As a registered charity, the club is run by dedicated volunteers who are committed to developing players both on and off the pitch through teamwork, respect, sportsmanship and enjoyment of the game.

Over the years, the club has grown to support boys’ and girls’ teams across a wide range of age groups, helping hundreds of young people develop confidence, friendships and a lifelong love of football. Twyford Spartans continues to play an important role within the local community and is proud to work in partnership with Tiverton Town Football Club to help develop grassroots football throughout the area.

Our History

Twyford Spartans was founded in 1975, originally as Tiverton Cub Scouts Football Club. The team’s first match was played in 1976 against Stoke Hill Cubs. As football became increasingly popular, many boys were joining the Cub Scouts primarily to take part in football activities, creating a conflict with the Scouts’ wider objectives. To allow both organisations to flourish independently, the football club became Twyford Spartans.

The name “Twyford” comes from the historic name for Tiverton, meaning “two fords” across the River Exe. “Spartans” was inspired by the famous story of the Spartan warriors, reflecting determination, resilience and teamwork.

Since its formation, the club has enjoyed success both at home and abroad, winning youth tournaments across Europe, including in Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. Teams have also represented the club in Sweden, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland, France, Spain and San Marino, providing unforgettable experiences for generations of young players.

The club has been proud to play a part in the development of many talented footballers, including England youth international and professional footballer Jay Stansfield, who began his football journey at Twyford Spartans.

Twyford Spartans Youth F.C. is dedicated to advancing the physical education and wellbeing of young people by providing inclusive, safe, and supportive opportunities to play association football, promoting teamwork, fair play, and equal access for all within the community.
